American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
Become an American Red Cross certified lifeguard in our four-day crash course. Learn the practical skills necessary to recognize a critical situation and provide lifesaving care to individuals in the water. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications are included in the course.
Participants must pass a written exam to become certified.
In order to participate in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training class, all participants MUST be able to complete the pre-requisities for the class:
Prerequisites:

Must be at least 15 years old

Must be able to attend all four days of the course in their entirety

Must be able to complete 300 yards continuous swimming (consisting of freestyle and breaststroke) without stopping or touching the bottom (performed on first day of class)

Timed Event: Must swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 9 feet to retrieve a 10lb brick, swim 20 yards on your back with the brick, place the brick on the side of the pool and exit without the use of a ladder or stairs in one minute and 40 seconds

Must be able to tread water for 2 minutes using legs only

Course Fees:
$250 for members
$350 for non-members
A rental Lifeguard Training Book is included in the cost of the program. The book MUST be returned at the end of the session. If you wish to purchase your own book, there is an additional cost of $45.
After registration is complete, you MUST stop by the West Suburban YMCA Front Desk to pick up your Lifeguard Training book and the first homework assignment that will be due on the FIRST day of class.

*Note: There needs to be a minimum of four participants registered in order for the class to run. We only allow ten in a class. A full payment is required to guarantee your spot in the class. The West Suburban YMCA has a no refund policy.
Recertification Class Information
Keep your certifications current!
Prerequisites:

Must have a current or recently expired (no greater than 1 month) certifications in Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR/AED

Must have a CURRENT certification in Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR/AED. If your certification expires prior to the last day of the class, you cannot complete the recertification process per American Red Cross. You must complete the course in its entirety to renew your certification.
