Swim Definitions
Adult Lap Swim (ages 16+): Swimmers must swim laps in the pool. Kickboards and pull buoys are available for use
Adult Rec Swim (ages 16+): Swimmers can do water exercises other than laps (e.g., aqua jogging, water aerobics, use barbells and noodles).
Family Swim (all ages*): Play-time for families in the pool. Noodles, barbells, toys, and bubble belts are available for use. Swimmers may be in the deep end if they pass the Deep End Swim Test.
*Children under 7 must be one-on-one with an adult (age 16+) within arms reach of accompanying adult
Youth Rec (ages 7-16*): Play-time for kids and families in the pool (usually in the small pool). Noodles, barbells, toys, and bubble belts are available for use. Swimmers may be in the deep end if they pass the Deep End Swim Test.
*Children over the age of 7 who cannot swim independently must be one-on-one and within arms reach of accompanying adult (age 16+)
Youth Lap (ages 7-16): This is a lap lane in the Big Pool designated to youth and teens interested in swimming laps. This is not a free play-time. Swimmers MUST be competent swimmers (Flying Fish level or higher).
Pool Rules
1) Please do not enter pool area without a Lifeguard on Duty.
2) 3 Whistle blasts - Evacuate pool (There is an Emergency)
3) Only YMCA approved Bubbles may be used for flotation.
4) In order to use the Deep End, you must be free of flotation devices, and pass the Deep End Test.
5) Absolutely NO:
a) Running
b) Horseplay
c) Diving
d) Eating or Glass on deck
e) Gum Chewing
f) Hanging on Lane Lines
g) Band-Aids or Bandages
h) Shoes (please use shoe covers)
6) All swimmers MUST shower prior to entering the pool. (Per Board of Health)
7) All swimmers MUST wear a swim cap while in the pool. These can be purchased at the Front Desk.
8) Must wear proper swim attire.
9) Rules and requests made by Lifeguard must always be followed. They are trained and here to protect you.
Pool Etiquette
Pool Etiquette for Family & Youth Recreational Swim
1) DO NOT enter pool area without a Lifeguard on duty, and present.
2) 3 Whistle blast – Evacuate Pool. 1 Whistle blast is to get swimmers attention.
3) All swimmers under the age of 7 MUST be one-on-one and within arm’s reach of an adult in the pool.
4) Youth Recreational swim time is for swimmers ages 7 to 15. Please note: Drop off policy, any child under the age of 12 needs to have an adult present.
5) All swimmers who do not pass a Deep End Test or need flotation; must stay inside the shallow end of the pool.
6) Horseplay is NOT allowed. This includes, but is not limited, to the following: no sitting/standing on shoulders; no splashing; no throwing children in the air or water; no dunking under water; and no spitting water.
7) Please LOOK before you jump. When jumping, jump in feet first and forward facing. No diving, twisting, or flips allowed.
8) Use of pool equipment and toys is at the discretion of the lifeguard.
9) Any swimmer who refuses to follow the Pool Rules and causes safety concerns will be asked to leave the pool area.
Lap and Recreational Swim Rules & Etiquette
1) Alert swimmers when entering lane
2) When two swimmers share a lane-one stays on the right, the other-stays to the left.
3) When three or more swimmers share a lane, you circle swim. When circle swimming, stay on the right side of the lane, counter-clockwise.
4) Survey the speed of the swimmers in each lane and then enter the appropriate lane for your swimming ability.
5) If the swimmer behind you taps your foot, please let that swimmer pass you at the end of the length.
6) Lap swimmers must be at least 16 years of age. At the discretion of the lifeguard, advanced swimmers under the age of 16 may swim if it is not too crowded.
a. Youth Lap – for swimmers ages 7-15 that are capable of swimming full laps and are at a Flying Fish level or higher. Swimmers must circle swim when required.
7) Recreational swim is for Non-Lap Swimmers. If there is space available in the recreational area, the Lifeguard may allow space for a lap swimmer overflow.
